Frequently asked questions

How do you convert an annual salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the annual salary by the number of working hours per year. With a 40-hour week and 52 weeks, that is 2,080 hours — so a $52,000 salary is $25/hour. Adjust the hours if your week is shorter or you take unpaid leave.

Why is my contract day-rate not directly comparable to a salary?

Contractors typically cover their own leave, sick days, insurance, equipment, and gaps between contracts. A common rule of thumb is that a contract rate needs to be 20–40% higher than the salary equivalent to break even on total compensation.

Is the result gross or net (take-home) pay?

All conversions are gross (before tax). Income tax, social security, and other deductions depend on your country and personal situation, so take-home pay will be lower.
