GPS Speedometer
About the GPS Speedometer
A GPS speedometer that reads your device’s satellite location to show your live speed, plus trip stats: maximum speed, average speed and distance travelled. Switch units between km/h, mph and knots, and use HUD mode to mirror the display onto a windshield. It works best outdoors on a mobile device with GPS and processes location on-device.
This tool works in your browser: the files and text you use are processed on your device and are not uploaded.
How to use it
- Open the tool on a phone outdoors and allow location access.
- Press start; move to see your speed update from the GPS signal.
- Use the unit toggle for km/h, mph or knots, and Reset Trip to clear the stats.
Frequently asked questions
How does it measure speed without a car sensor?
It uses your device’s GPS, which reports speed and position directly. Distance is calculated from successive coordinates, and the average and maximum are tracked across your trip.
Why is my speed 0 or jumpy indoors?
GPS needs a clear view of the sky. Indoors or between tall buildings the signal is weak, so use it outdoors for a stable, accurate reading.
What units are supported?
Kilometres per hour (km/h), miles per hour (mph) and knots (kn), with distance shown in km or miles to match.
What is HUD mode?
HUD (heads-up display) mode flips the display horizontally so it reads correctly when reflected off a windshield at night. Only use it as a passenger or when safely parked.
